Exclusive Family Tour
Cape Town, the Gardenroute and Safaris in Eastern Cape or Madikwe Game Reserve are perfect for family travels! These areas are malaria free and offer child friendly hotels and lodges and plenty of activities!
This exclusive family tour contains the most beautiful highlights of Cape Town and direct environment, as well as a drive along the Garden Route, ending with a Safari in a malaria free area.
Travelling with children has become more and more popular and compared to some years ago, lots of hotels are now spezialized in children. They offer family rooms, babysitting facilities, cinema, play room and even a cooking class.
Some of the lodges in private game reserves, allow children from a certain age to go on game drives ( discretion of the manager ) or else, you can hire a game vehicle for exclusive use.
Cape Town and the Garden Route are perfect holiday destinations for parents with children. There is so much to see and to do like Table Mountain, a boat cruise to the seals, penguin colony or Scratch Patch in Simons Town.
Along the Garden Route you find long white beaches, monkeyland, elephant sanctuary, a snake park and lots more.
In this itineray I have included some more exclusive accommodation. This tour can be booked with a rental car or your own private tourguide.
On Safari the rangers will look after all your needs.

See below a suggested itinerary with a Madikwe Game Reserve experience:
Itinerary
- DAY 1 / CAPE TOWN
- On arrival at the airport, collection of your rental car and drive to the hotel.
Check in, time to relax and recover after this long flight with your children.
Overnight in interleading family rooms, One & Only Cape Town incl breakfast - DAY 2 / CAPE TOWN CITY & CAPE PENINSULA
- I recommend to take the cable car up Table Mountain first thing in the morning ( wheather dependent, this might have to be postponed to the afternoon).
Afterwards drive along the False Bay to Simons Town, for a visit of Scratch Patch, a mineral world for kids to play and collect some of the beautiful gemstones as a souvenir.
You continue to Boulders Beach for a visit of the Penguin colony. These cute little Penguins steal everyone’s heart while waddling clumsily along the beach.
Lastly, a must see for the parents: the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, also known as the Cape of Storms. Take a walk to the lighthouse and enjoy the great panorama of the ocean. Drive back in the afternoon via Chapman's Peak Drive.
Overnight in interleading family rooms, One & Only Cape Town incl breakfast - DAY 3 / WINELANDS
- There is so much to see and to do for kids: visit the Butterfly World in Paarl, a tropical garden in a 1000m2 green house with an abundance of free flying exotic butterflies. Great fun for the young ones.
Thereafter go to Fairview and the spice route where you have a choice of biltong tasting, beer tasting, chocolate tasting, wine tasting, grappa tasting, cheese tasting etc… :o), while the kids enjoy themselves on a playground or feeding the goats at the goat tower.
Explore Stellenbosch for a visit of the toy and miniature museum ( closed on Tuesdays ).
And lastly you could take a drive to the Cheetah encounter at Somerset West. Here the kids have the opportunity to learn about Cheetahs and touch some of the little cubs ( at an extra charge).
There are beautiful winefarms all over the area, that offer child friendly picnic places, for adults to enjoy and kids to play around.
Overnight in interleading family rooms, One & Only Cape Town incl breakfast - DAY 4 / OUDTSHOORN
- After check out, travel along the Panorama route R62 to Oudthoorn. It's amazing how the scenery changes just outside of Cape Town and becomes more ''africalike". Children will enjoy a visit to an ostrich farm where they learn all about the ostriches during an interesting tour. A tractor ride can also be enjoyed.
overnight in family room, Surval Boutique Olive Estate - DAY 5-7 / PLETTENBERG BAY
- Today you drive to the heart of the Gardenroute, Knysna + Plettenberg Bay. Enjoy long walks on beautiful beaches, visit Monkeyland Prime Sanctuary: this primate sanctuary is currently the top eco-tourism attraction on the Garden Route. Monkeyland has captured the hearts of visitors in it/s efforts to rehabilitate and free previously caged primates. They are free to move about the forest and this they do most harmoniously.
Next to Monkeyland you find the elephant sanctuary. See the stables where the elephants sleep at night. Guests learn about elephant anatomy and are able to feed them. On some hot or rainy days you may see the elephants swimming.
overnight in luxury family room, the Plettenberg Hotel - DAY 8-11 / MADIKWE GAME RESERVE
- After check out, drive to George airport ( +- 90km) , return your rental vehicle and check in for flight (2h) to Johannesburg. On arrival in Johannesburg, road transfer ( +-2.5 h) to Madikwe Game Reserve.
Madikwe Game Reserve is currently the fifth largest game reserve and is also one of the lesser- known parks in South Africa. This makes it a hidden- gem as it is regarded as one of the best conservation areas in Africa and offers the Big 5 in a 680 km2 park (750 km2 including newly incorporated privately owned land). The park offers a number of luxurious lodges as well as community lodges in a malaria- free zone.
Makikwe is close to Botswana and offers a true wildlife experience.
The family friendly lodges offer children programms and envolve them in cooking and tracking. Rates include 2 game drives daily and all meals.
